To set up your own site you will need to follow these steps:

  1. First I recommend you install a firewall (to stop hackers etc) - even if you are only using email.

You can download one for free from Zone Labs

  2. Obtain some web space.  I originally used my ISP's (email provider's) site; they give me 10Mbytes for free.

However see point 9 if you intend to run a photo gallery like ours.

  3. You need to create a web page.  You can do this quite adequately for now using the latest version of Microsoft Word (e.g. Word 2000). Go to File.. New... and select a Web template.

Just create something simple for now - until you know it works!

  4. Work out how to upload (publish) your files to the web space - your ISP will probably provide instructions on how to do this on their web site (or see my ISP's procedure).

You will need to make a note of the publishing address provided for you by your ISP.

  5. This will probably require you to obtain an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program. I obtained one for free from Ipswitch.

  6. Follow the publishing procedure to upload your pages to the address given and then go to Internet Explorer and type in the address for your web page...

  7. If you want a better URL (Web address) than the one given to you by your web space provider. You can buy one for as little as £7 at 123-Reg.

  8. If you would like further help, try looking at your ISPs web site or follow these links to my old ISP's help pages:

    * A list of Top Sites for further help

  9. To set up a Gallery like ours, get the source code for free from Gallery.

It's not an easy process to get this working, but it is not impossible!

Note that the server you host your site on needs to support PHP (a scripting language).

  10. You can get lots of free web space - try searching for 'free web hosting' on the internet.

As mentioned, to run the Gallery, you need the site to support PHP - try Web-Mania or search for 'PHP web hosting'.
